about
This is an uplifting song about finding your voice in intimidating relationships. I have a pattern, even though I know better, of losing my voice in these situations. There are just some personalities that send me back to when I was a small girl navigating turbulent waters. As I get older, the time it takes to recover my voice gets shorter, and once my voice finds its footing, it is usually strong and steady and a little amused by my inability to avoid the pattern. People who know me are surprised that I have this habit; I have a reputation for being diplomatic, but outspoken and sometimes rather blunt. My hope is that others may recognize a similar pattern and realize it is a habit rather than a character defect if you can get past it and find your voice. It’s fitting that a crisis of confidence in my vocals happened as I was preparing to record this song; demons from the past do rush back in sometimes, but they can be overcome.
lyrics
Patiently, patiently, patiently
I give you space to be
Patiently, patiently, patiently
I look for room to breathe
And the words you spoke ring through my head
What I should have answered stays unsaid
It follows me into my bed instead
Patiently, patiently, patiently
I always turn a cheek
Patiently, patiently, patiently
I look for room to speak
And the words you spoke ring through my head
What I should have answered stays unsaid
It follows me into my bed instead
Slowly I get my feet under me
Slowly my eyes rise up from my feet
Slowly my words form between my teeth
And I speak
And I speak
Patiently, patiently, patiently
I bring out more of me
Patiently, patiently, patiently
I speak authentically
And the words I spoke ring through my head
What I said instead was spirited
It leaves me in my bed so comforted
And the words I spoke ring through my head
What I said instead was spirited
It leaves me in my bed so comforted
Patiently, patiently, patiently
I dream of what will be

In addition to songwriting, lead vocals, and writing the harmony vocals, I played cello and acoustic guitar, and I performed backing vocals on this song. Kenny Schick, my producer, also sang backing vocals and played or programmed all of the other instruments. Kenny recorded his parts at Basement3Productions in Nashville, TN, and I recorded my acoustic guitar and my vocal parts in March 2018 with Steven Glaze at ToneFreq Studio in San Jose, California. I then recorded my cello part, written and recorded by Kenny, at Nice N Up Studios in San Francisco, CA in September 2019.
